Join Us!

We have officially launched our fundraising efforts to make JumpStart Costa Rica a reality at 14 sites across the country. As mentioned in our previous post, thanks to our partnership with the Peace Corps Costa Rica and their remarkable volunteers, we'll be bringing these intensive, free, vacation English camps to communities from the northern border with Nicaragua, to the southern border with Panama. The diversity is incredible - a Caribbean port city, two indigenous communities, beach towns and mountain regions - and these kids really need your help to have their first-ever opportunity at learning English, something their peers at larger primary schools can take for granted.

How can you help? For complete information on tax-deductible donations in the U.S. or Costa Rica, please check out the column at right! For more general info about the program, please check out the rest of this site.

And we received some more inspiring news yesterday: A group of JumpStart coordinators from the Peace Corps are looking to run 26.2 miles at the Panama City Marathon on Dec. 7th, and raise money for their camps with every mile. Take a look at how even a few dollars per mile adds up to a big contribution toward JumpStart:

$1/mile = school supplies for one student for the whole camp
$2/mile = snacks for one student for the whole camp
$5/mile = transportation for a group of students for the whole camp
$10/mile = the entire cost of sending one student to camp

Again, for donation information, please look to the right; to register your gift in honor of a particular PCV racer, email bchildress@crmultilingue.org.

JumpStart 2013, Here We Come!

We are thrilled to announce that plans for JumpStart 2013 are successfully underway! This photo of the map in Costa Rica Multilingüe's office shows the locations of the ten Peace Corps Volunteers who confirmed last week that they will join us as JumpStart Coordinators in their communities, adding ten new programs to our original camp in Los Santos. As you can see, we'll be working all over the country - from the northern border with Nicaragua (in La Cruz, Guanacaste), to the southern border with Panama (in Sabalito). We couldn't be happier to be working with these motivated, hardworking volunteers who are trained in the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language. For more information, stay tuned here, and/or follow us on Facebook!

They Grow Up So Fast...

We were sad to see JumpStart's 2012 Volunteer Teachers, Cameron and Seymour Smith, head back to Massachusetts this weekend, but we are so grateful for their more than two months of hard work and support for the kids of JumpStart. Here they are in early March with some of their students at the Vocational High School in San Pablo de León Cortés (see previous post for more information), including three original JumpStarters: Christian (directly in front of Cameron), Valery (with the shoulder bag), and Noella (kneeling, front and center). We met them as sixth-graders, wondering what high school would be like - but as you can see, they are certainly seventh-graders now, confident, and flaunting their English skills!

Taking High School By Storm

"I know, I know, I know, I know! I want to answer!"
"Me me me!"
"Three hundred thirty-three thousand, three hundred thirty-three!"

Those were just a few of the things overheard during a visit to a classroom at the San Pablo Vocational High School, where most of this year's JumpStart students are now well into their second month as seventh-graders. We heard that the students are showing off their new English skills and, even more important, great confidence as they enter this new phase. JumpStart Volunteer Teachers Seymour and Cameron Smith continue to work with them intensively, having them tackle everything from complex numbers to songs about the weather. We are pleased to say that today is Cameron's birthday! Happy Birthday, Cameron, and thanks so much for spending this day - and all of these months of hard work - with JumpStart.
Photos to follow.

Graduation Day!

It was a big week for JumpStart Costa Rica. On Tuesday the 7th, 25 kids graduated from the first-ever edition of the program at the Carrizal School, León Cortés, Los Santos, with big smiles and, according to them,

Also, the project was featured in today's edition of The Tico Times. Check it out here!

More soon on Tuesday's event and what's ahead for the kids and teachers. If you're just joining us, see donation information at right, or visit the tab above "What is JumpStart?" for background on this project.

They're On Their Way!

(Top: Seymour Smith explains a game of catch to reinforce conversational skills. Bottom: autographs by our JumpStart scholars.)

It was so exciting to see 24 kids begin the first-ever edition of JumpStart Costa Rica this week. Making it all possible were donors from Costa Rica, the United States, Canada, England and China; local in-kind supporters (details to be provided here shortly); and, of course, teachers, parents and community leaders in Los Santos, a beautiful, mountainous, coffee-growing region south of the nation's capital. Starting this past Monday, thanks to all of those people from far and wide, the elementary school in Carrizal de León Cortés filled with the sounds of hopscotch, Cops and Robbers, lessons and conversation, all in English! Volunteer teachers Seymour and Cameron Smith, of Massachusetts, had kids who've never taken an English class conversing and introducing themselves in no time at all. There's no doubt that by the end of a full month of classes, these kids will knock our socks off. Stay tuned for more on their progress. We still have a way to go before we meet our $5,000 fundraising goal, which will allow us to secure the rest of the supplies for the camp and provide academic support to these kids throughout their seventh-grade year. If you'd like to help us, please check out the column at right, and spread the word!
